The Evolution of Intelligent Tires

Paving the way for predictive maintenance and optimal fleet management

Configuration of sensors on truck tires
The trucking industry faces a growing number of challenges. The volume of goods being transported and the number of distribution vehicles continues to grow. Given the substantial rise in e-commerce shipments and increased commuter traffic, fleet managers are under pressure to tackle these demands efficiently. At the same time, they need to control costs in the face of rising energy and operational expenses.

Digital Solutions Are Key

Digitalization offers great opportunities to overcome these challenges. According to a recent study by the Fraunhofer IESE on future mobility, digital solutions are the key to optimizing operations and reducing costs. Fleet managers are increasingly using connected solutions, such as manufacturer apps, to generate real-time vehicle status reports and thus monitor the main cost drivers.

Tires play a decisive role in this digital transformation. Integrated tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are crucial for the efficiency of the vehicle fleet, making it possible to proactively manage scheduled maintenance, cut costs, minimize energy consumption and reduce emissions. TPMS systems also increase safety and comfort, optimize vehicle availability and prevent breakdowns on the road. In view of these benefits, they are now mandatory in many countries for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

How Sensors Revolutionize Tire Management

Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) work using tire sensors. These are fitted in each individual tire and are in direct contact with the air inside the tire. They measure physical parameters in real time and relay them to the control unit in the vehicle or the cloud. Pressure is measured with the precision of 1-2 psi or lower. This enables the tire sensors to quickly detect small variations in pressure, indicate a value deviation, and then trigger an alarm. The third-generation of sensors from Continental will also provide data on the tire’s tread depth, making it possible to predict when a tire needs to be changed.
